Don’t be Trashy. Do be Beary, Beary Careful

Trash services in Lanark Village

Most Lanark Village residents contract with one of the established trash pickup providers below to dispose of their garbage.

  • Waste One can be reached at 850-670-8130 or contacted through email or Facebook. Check their Facebook page for schedule changes around holidays. Tuesday is trash collection day for Lanark Village.

  • Waste Pro can be reached at 850- 561-0800. Monday is trash collection day for Lanark residents.

Which Lanark Village trash service should you choose?

How do your neighbors rate their trash service? When I queried friends and searched through the local Facebook pages I found some distinctions between the 2 service providers though people seemed overall happy with both. The cost is comparable, and both companies provide consistent weekly trash pickup. Long wait times for bear-proofed containers are at times a point of dissatisfaction for customers of both companies.

Waste One might be better for those who prefer working with a local provider rather than a chain. They also may be preferred by people with disabilities. If notified of a legitimate need, Waste One employees will pick receptacles up in front of your cottage, relieving residents of the need to roll them to the curb. Waste Pro does not provide this service and picks up curbside only.

If you’d like to hear some reviews from customers who have no skin in the game, I’d suggest going to the Lanark Life Facebook page and doing a search for “trash” or “garbage.” Doing so may give you a good feel for each service provider.

Beware the bears!

Whichever service you contract with, you’ll need to find some way to secure your can against the bears. They frequently break into Village garbage cans and scatter the contents across lawns and roadways.

Bear-proof trash cans reduce these incidents, but as noted above, residents complain they’re often unavailable from service providers or available only after a long wait.

However, bear-proofing modifications to trash receptacles can be made by residents. Here are some clear directions for doing that, if you decide to go that route.

If you want a bear-proof can but don’t want to modify yours or wait on your sanitation company to provide one for you, you can order them from Amazon instead, but be sure to speak with your provider first, to be sure they are okay with this.

Some residents place their cans inside bear-proof boxes rather than bear-proofing the cans. The containers, like the cans, do a good job of keeping bears out and can be sourced through Amazon or built by anyone who is handy with tools.

If you need further assistance with bear-proofing or finding ways to discourage these furry marauders from rifling through your trash, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission can lend you a hand. Check out their tips on this Facebook post, and call them if you need their help.

Perhaps the wisest way to keep bears out of your trash is to make it less appealing to them. Reducing food waste and freezing garbage before it goes in the can on trash day will help eliminate odors. Since the aroma of rotting garbage attracts bears and repels neighbors, going this route is a win/win.

Don’t be a trashy neighbor

Maybe that’s a good segue into a discussion about the connection between responsible trash disposal and being a good neighbor. Good neighbors contribute to the community’s overall well-kept appearance by lessening the likelihood that animals will dump trash into communal spaces. Good neighbors keep their cans off public roadways until the morning of trash pickup day and promptly remove them from county property once emptied. Good neighbors ask before putting their trash in someone else’s can.

Once you’ve established your identity as a good neighbor, you’re golden, and if you ever need help resolving any trash-related problems, just ask. We’ll be there to lend you a hand.
